THE NEIGHBORHOOD STORY
Kenwood is Chicago's most historically significant residential neighborhood — and one of its most underappreciated. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the city's most fashionable address, home to Chicago's merchant princes and manufacturing titans. The mansions they built still stand, largely intact, on Greenwood, Woodlawn, and Ellis Avenues. President Barack Obama's Chicago home is on Greenwood Avenue. The neighborhood has maintained its architectural integrity while evolving into a diverse, engaged community that balances its historic identity with a contemporary sensibility.
